Hello there, I'm Maddy Perry, a graphic designer and illustrator.

This is my portfolio showcasing my most notable graphic design work and illustrations.

Bright Minds Academy

For this project, I was given three weeks to create a logo for a fictional company. The fictional company, Bright Minds Academy, is an after-school learning center that offers tutoring, STEM workshops, and creative arts programs for children and teens. I wanted to focus on the community, education, and support that the academy offered. I spent a lot of time sketching out ideas, refining them, and then refining even more until this final design was ultimately chosen.Program(s) Used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
Estimated Time to Complete: 20 hours

Scrooge's Bakehouse Goodies

I was given the opportunity to design a logo for my mother's bakery business. She's a small business owner who bakes with fresh and quality ingredients, supplying them to wholesalers and customers with her storefront and preorders. She had some ideas in mind, such as using the initials of her business name as her primary logo, and she liked her existing color palette already. I wanted to convey a sense of simplicity, friendliness, and trustworthiness in this logo design through the use of bold, but soft fonts.Program(s) Used: Procreate Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
Estimated Time to Complete: 10 hours

JMP Services

For this project, I made a logo for my brother's newly forming business. He's a handyman who primarily focuses on lawncare. He wanted something simple, professional, bold, friendly, and trustworthy. I took a lot of time researching what visuals are out there, trying to avoid the cliche stuff, and figuring out how I'd showcase both the feeling of his business and how it relates to the "what" of the business. I ended up showing him 4 concepts, and he picked his favourite one with a few variations. I also designed an advertisement flyer for him so he can print and put them wherever applicable to help push his business out there.Program(s) Used: Procreate Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
Estimated Time to Complete: 6 hours

Moriah Elizabeth Packaging

The client I chose for this project is Moriah Elizabeth, a content creator who illustrates and paints. My idea of dessert-themed duck plushies was right up her alley. I spent a lot of time researching what could be done with a trapezoid packaging, and I came up with the idea of a blind box. She has a very obvious style with rainbows, desserts, dripping, and more, so I wanted to convey her style but also add my own creative aspect to it as well.Program(s) Used: Procreate, Adobe Illustrator
Estimated Time to Complete: 10 hours

Ironclad Gaming Packaging

The fictional client I had for this project was Ironclad Gaming. They wanted a design for a mechanical keyboard box using RGB-style "Gamer" display typography. I did a lot of research on what's out there, forming ideas to which I then sketched several concepts before choosing one. I wanted to make sure there was a consistent flow throughout the entire box, and the blue/magenta neon vibe keeps with the theme effectively. I kept the typography clean and aligned to make reading easy to follow. There are no preexisting mockups out there that meet the requirements for displaying this packaging. So, my friend graciously sent some pictures of a keyboard box he had lying around, and I took those images into Photoshop and made the mockups myself.Program(s) Used: Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
Estimated Time to Complete: 10 hours

Skills Canada

I competed in Skills Canada at the provincial level, where we were tasked with designing a logo, honey bottle label, and social media carousel for the business, Honey Queen, based in Canada. The logo itself was due in two hours after the competition began, so I prioritized ideation and execution during that time. Especially since the logo was the design that assisted with how the other two projects would look. With a short deadline, I kept it simple and prioritized a design that's visually pleasing and aligns with the brand's identity, while ensuring each piece remains cohesive.Program(s) Used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign
Estimated Time to Complete: 6 hours

Song Cover

This was a collaboration project with the photography student, Anthony, who took the amazing photos I used for the design, as I took on the role of an art director, designing a cover for a song while making sure the elements involved could be photographed. I chose the song "Warrior" by Livingston. It's about the transformation from being lost to being empowered through love, support, and reliance. I went with hands holding together with their pinkies to symbolize that close, binding support one may get through a loving bond. I also chose butterflies as they're an obvious and powerful pick for symbolizing transformation. I went with a warm color palette with orange tones, kind of representing natural light from the sun during a sunset/sunrise, while having a contrast of darker colors to allow the orange notes to catch your eye nicely.Program(s) Used: Procreate, Adobe Photoshop
Estimated Time to Complete: 11 hours

Radiant Electron

The fictional client I designed for is called Radiant Electron. They wanted a phone wallpaper that had an impactful word with a healthy amount of negative space. I did some research into what's out there in terms of single-word wallpapers, then I played around with either having the background completely bare or adding some decorative elements to help pull the eye in. The decorative elements were ultimately chosen. I spent some time in Illustrator playing with the word. I actually combined two fonts. The "olden" part is a font called Birthstone Bounce, but I didn't like how the "G" looked, since I had a specific design in mind where the "olden" tucks into the "G", so I found the font called Inkfree, which is exactly what I was looking for. I tweaked some of the lines a bit before it looked exactly how I wanted.Program(s) Used: Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
Estimated Time to Complete: 3.5 hours

Littlesteps Toy Co.

This font was designed for the fictional company, Littlesteps Toy Co. They wanted a rounded font to use for toddler toy packaging and educational materials. I did some research into pre-existing rounded fonts, then started looking into how toddlers interpret letters and used that to make a more legible and clear font they can learn from. It was definitely a challenge to learn all the guidelines for designing a typeface, but I learned a lot.Program(s) Used: Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, Birdfont, Adobe Photoshop
Estimated Time to Complete: 15 hours

With Malice Book Design

Book cover design! "With Malice" by Eileen Cook is a psychological thriller that is about a girl who suffers from amnesia after a car accident that takes the life of her best friend. It takes her through trying to recollect what happened in the last 6 weeks of her life and the online world spreading rumours on whether it was an accident or not...
I really wanted to capture that level of uneasiness and distorted reality with this design, with the glitch effect, texture, the distorted face, and the teal color. With the interior spread, I kept it very similar to what the book already has, as each chapter bounces between the girl's perspective and online chat. I did adjust some things for hierarchy purposes, though.
Program(s) Used: Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop
Estimated Time to Complete: 11 hours

Book Posters

Legend by Marie Lu, One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus, and Blind by Rachel DeWoskin are the three books that I chose to define each theme and create compelling poster designs. They each have very different themes. With the limitations of no gradients and a five-color palette, I set forth to problem-solve my way to some pretty interesting designs. For Legend by Marie Lu, the theme focuses heavily on loyalty, betrayal, and survival. I wanted to showcase the two main characters and the different worlds they live in while using the phoenix to symbolize the resilience and perseverance each character's journey takes them. For One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus, the theme is secrets, deceptions, and trust. I wanted to simulate a detective's board to showcase what's going on, while the red marks over each face represent the deception and secrets each of them is keeping. It's seemingly chaotic, but also meticulously laid out.For Blind by Rachel DeWoskin, the themes are adaptation, self-discovery, and resilience. I wanted to showcase the sense of blurriness, and the world around the character is no longer the same she once remembered. But the inner eye shows the way she starts to perceive things in new ways, and that adaptation and self-discovery to her new reality.Program(s) Used: Adobe Illustrator
Estimated Time to Complete: 12 hours

Board Game

My task for this school project was to redesign an existing board game into whatever theme one desired. My chosen board game was Clue, as I thought designing a murder mystery themed project would be quite fun. I thought of a couple of ideas before I went with a marshmallow cat theme in pastels and clouds. I thought it'd be ironic to include fire since not only does it convey that sense of danger lurking around, but marshmallows are prone to being flammable, so it's funny to think that they chose to have a campfire, candles, etc., around their place of residence.Program(s) Used: Adobe Illustrator
Estimated Time to Complete: 20 hours

Student Showcase

This was for a student project that was displayed in an art gallery for about a month. The theme for this was "Embracing Chaos," and I had five prompts I was given to create a piece of art. My five prompts were: casino, confused, book, night, and mustard yellow... Quite an interesting array of prompts, but I spent a lot of time in the sketching phase trying to figure out how I wanted the composition and how to incorporate all the prompt words in a way that worked for my ideas. I wanted to play with a dynamic perspective and figured having the books displayed as if they were buildings would be a fun way to use some of the prompt words.Program(s) Used: Procreate
Estimated Time to Complete: 10 hours

T-Shirt Design

This was a school project where I was able to pick what I wanted to design. I chose to design T-shirts that encapsulate the feeling of Minecraft. I wanted to stay away from the cliche stuff and focus on illustration-heavy storytelling that hopefully invokes a sense of nostalgia. I focused on three different themes: building, community, and adventure for the designs. As those themes encapsulate the feeling and meaning of Minecraft in quite simple terms, they work together, but also separately, since you decide your own journey within Minecraft.Program(s) Used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
Estimated Time to Complete: 20 hours

Canadian Mental Health Association

I created a visual campaign for the Canadian Mental Health Association of PEI as I've always been a big advocate for supporting mental health, and I figured it would be a great thing to design for. My main goal was to stray away from overused mental health design, but still make it clear it's about mental health. I wanted something that would catch your eye in a bold and inspiring way.Program(s) Used: Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
Estimated Time to Complete: 15 hours

Patterns

My first project as a second-year graphic design student was to create seamless patterns in Adobe Illustrator and use Adobe Photoshop to create the mockups for the applications. I spent some time researching ideas, designing them in Procreate until vectoring them in Illustrator for easy scalability. I decided to keep them themed towards a whimsical mushroom forest. Using a fictional coffee shop to keep the designs practical, I designed 3 different patterns and applied them to products you'd likely see in a coffee shop with this theme.Program(s) Used: Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
Estimated Time to Complete: 6 hours
